A mathematical model of a linear-induction magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) pump is formulated, on the basis of detailed magnetic and electrical equivalent circuits, allowing the influence of longitudinal and transverse edge effects to be taken into account, as well as the limited extent of the secondary element. Some results of simulation are presented. Original channel designs for the MHD pump increase the tractional force in the channel when it is partially filled with metal. © 2006 by Allerton Press, Inc.
