Based on the theory of polymeric structure of molten silicates, a method of calculating the oxidation rate of silicon is developed by taking into account the different forms of silicate anions. The reaction considered involves the oxidation of silicon by molten ferrous slag. When the polymeric structure of the molten oxide is considered the overall rate of silicon oxidation is fairly close to the rate obtained from molecular concepts.
