To interpret the Russia’s image created by Sir Winston Churchill in “The World Crisis. 1916-1918” the author of the article turns to the conception of Richard E. Palmer, who is supposed to be one of the leading American theorists of hermeneutics. Interpretation of the metaphoric part of a text that represents the image of Russia at the end of WW I is done step-by-step. According to R. Palmer, the process of interpretation of a word expression is initially the process of verbalization of the author’s thought. Then, the process of interpretation emphasizes the aspect of explanation, and finally, comes a special form of the basic interpretative process - translation into a foreign language. The analysis of individual metaphoric presentation of the image of Russia at the end of WW I is implemented in the article in accordance with the consistent process of interpretation. Making an attempt to explain the personified metaphoric image the author of the article refers to the practice of metaphoric modeling. The article provides some dictionary definitions and reference information from “Encyclopedia Britannica” to introduce the contextual analysis of the metaphoric model “Russia is A Person”. While translating the author’s original text into Russian the metaphor of personification is realized in accordance with the associations of interpreters, who make the image of Russia to be a Person with the characteristics of despair and sacrifice.
