The article analyzes foreign linguistic discussions on American English and its influence upon the British variant both in synchronic and diachronic aspects. With reference to scholars’ debates, writers’ opinions, polemics in the mass media and Internet users’ open commentaries, the author considers the system of stereotypes formed by colonial ideology and dominating as yet. The analysis reveals that linguistic reflection makes an important part of the national and cultural self-consciousness of the British people.
