The article scrutinizes the notion industrial region at different stages of world economy functioning; and stages of evolution of the theory of industrial regions both in Russian and foreign science are named. Special attention is paid to the Italian school of industrial regions. Factors of their successful development and functioning are explored. On the basis of geo-economic approach the authors come out with a new paradigm of industrial region as a local stricture in the global economy.
