The article is devoted to the discussion of the results of forming and implementing of the strategy of the innovation activity development at the Ural Federal University. The changes in global and Russian economies which cause the increasing of the leading universities' role for the regional economies development as well as new challenges and opportunities are considered. The experience of the Ural Federal University in the implementing of the innovation strategies as well as the reasons restraining innovation activity are discussed.
