The article is devoted to the problems of the interpretation such a concept as a volunteering in dictionaries, in legal documents, in different scientific articles and monographs. It was found that conventional understudying of the volunteering captures only some particular aspects. The theoretical research has led to the essence of the volunteering as a sociological notion. We identified and classified by the principles and features of the volunteering as a social phenomenon.
