Issues of professionalization stages of translator/interpreter social and professional community are considered in the article. Social biography analysis has been implemented: from being an interpreter hundreds years ago to elite high-skilled specialist in the Soviet period; from having a high status in the USSR to a decreasing status of the profession in Russia nowadays. Peculiarities of forming social and professional community have been revealed: input monitoring is hindered, there are "hybrid" forms of employment.
