The methodological aspects of using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to study the chemical composition, charge state, and electronic parameters of the surface of a complex oxide ceramic containing sections with different electronic conductivity are discussed for ceramic in the system BeO - TiO2 - C. Questions concerning surface preparation of a ceramic by means of Ar+ ion bombardment and mechanical cleaning with a diamond scraper in vacuum are examined.
