Degradation of molten alkali polyphosphates, induced by potassium permanganate, is studied as dependent on the KMnO4 content, temperature, and reaction time. The reaction products show ortho-, di-, tri-, and tetraphosphate anions, as well as manganese compounds of different oxidation states. Empirical equations for the number-average molecular weight as a function of melt temperature are deduced.
