A procedure for calculating the movement of ferroalloy pieces in a ladle into which steel is being poured is described. Results calculated with this purely hydrodynamic part of the mathematical model being built agree well with cold model experiments. The model is to be amplified to deal with physicochemical effects in the assimilation of solid ferroalloy by the liquid metal and will enable conditions to be optimised.
