Phase stability and properties of Fe-Mn system alloys and steels were studied using physical methods of research, Moessbauer spectroscopy in particular. Comparative studies of interatomic interactions were carried out for Fe-Mn and Fe-Ni systems to reveal the specificity of manganese effect on properties of Fe-Mn alloys. A consideration is given to the mechanism of manganese austenite strengthening as well as to the effect of chromium alloying and to short-range ordering. Moessbauer study results and order parameter values are presented for a number of Fe-Mn alloys (G8, G16, G21, G20T1, G20S3, G40, G40N, G40Kh10).
