Comparative experiments were conducted with water-air and water jet cooling of the base of rails to improve rail heat treatment schedules. Results of water cooling using flat jet atomisers were favourable, and a four section interim cooling unit was developed for cooling the base of long rails. The proposed cooling method provides easier control of water pressure, lowers the level of residual stresses in the rail base, and subsequently reduces rail curvature.
