Structural investigations have revealed morphological and crystallographic singularities of the MC carbide in single crystals of an alloy of the ZhC6 type produced by directional solidification compared to earlier observations for polycrystals of the same composition after normal solidification. For directional solidification of the alloy, both in the original state and after heat treatment to produce a more uniform structure (1230-1270°C, 1 hr, cooling at 50 deg/min), the γ/γ′ matrix includes colonies of orderly distributed, long, straight and highly anisotropic crystals of a kind not typical of polycrystalline materials. In contrast to polycrystalline materials of the same type, microdiffraction analysis showed a strict orientation relation between the crystal lattices of the γ phase and MC carbide.
