Gases emitted from the bulk of a steel substrate and desorbed from its surface in heating in the process of enameling are identified. It is shown that the effect of the steel substrate on the composition of gas bubbles in the glass-enamel coating consists in generation of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and steam. © 1996 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
