The microstructure of hardened bars from aluminum alloy 2014 of the Al - Cu - Mg - Si system is analyzed. Metallographic investigation of the morphological features and of the element composition of the structural components of the alloy with features of overburning is performed using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The specific symptoms of the phenomenon of «overburning» in alloy 2014 are coarsening of inclusions of a complex chemical composition Al15(Fe, Mn)3Si2 and appearance of intragrain globules about 10 μm in size that form the matrix structure of a copper-rich phase with fine dispersed inclusions of phase Al15(Fe, Mn)3Si2. The mechanism of formation of the structures indicating overburning is considered.
