Based on the primary data of the budget survey of researchers in 1925, the article analyses their family structure, typology and parenthood status. The scientific community was distinguished by a high marriage rate, indicating the importance of the family for organising the work and life of a researcher. In turn, scientists needed sufficient income to satisfy basic and other needs of the family. These special functions of a researcher's family as an important prerequisite for scientific creativity are reflected not only in the high marriage rate, but also in the spread of the extended family type.
