The article describes the cognitive metaphor of light-shadow-darkness in the works of A. P. Chekhov, specifically his description of a character professing their love. It is revealed that this cognitive metaphor has a complex structure, and the illumination of the space in which the participants of the scene are located is connected with their fate.
