Methods and apparatus for improving the plasticity of brittle materials under cold upsetting with lateral support are offered. The results of upsetting on smooth plates, of upsetting on smooth plates using two punches, including gaskets, as well as improved upsetting scheme are studied. The examples of schemes in the deformation of magnesium are presented. It is shown that the proposed scheme can significantly improve the ductility of the metal.
