The authors of this article identified for the first time, consider M. Ja. Sjuzjumov’s essay “Genesis of the Germans racial superiority “theory” in the Middle Ages.” They based on archival materials. The authors published this text for the first time, preserved in the personal collection of Professor Sjuzjumov in the State Archive of the Sverdlovsk Region (Found R-802). M. Ja. Sjuzjumov used pre-revolutionary materials for its preparation. Primarily, data from sources made during the work on the medal essay on “Campaigns of the South Italian Normans against Byzantium.” They were kept for many years by his parents in Tallinn. After the formation of the Soviet Estonia and the republic’s entry into the USSR, M. Ja. Sjuzjumov transported the materials to Sverdlovsk. They served as the basis for the popular lecture “Italian campaigns of the German knights.” Essay traces the oldest tradition, dating back to the Roman Empire, which in an extremely primitive form was assimilated and appropriated by the ideologists of German National Socialism. Associate Professor Sjuzjumov’s essay was not intended for academic discussion. In wartime conditions, Soviet historians and philosophers were required to produce propaganda materials that would become the framework for propaganda work among the soldiers and commanders of the Red Army, as well as the civilian population in the rear areas.
