The article presents a brief overview of the collective monograph Digital Divide: the Internet and social inequality in international perspective (2013). The key issue of the fundamental research is the digital inequality in modern society. The authors demonstrate the applicability of the classical sociological theories of K. Marx, M. Weber and E. Durkheim to the actual problems caused by virtual inequality. A distinctive feature of the study is the global scale of the comparative analysis of digital discrimination, which is becoming an additional factor of social stratifi cation. The theoretical data is synthesized with a signifi cant amount of empirical data obtained through various forms of data collection (conducting interviews, off-line and online surveys; using offi cial state statistics; secondary analysis of data presented by agencies of public opinion).
