The article analyzes three time periods in development of the residential buildings architecture with a metal frame in the USA: the second half of the 19th century, the 1950s and 1960s and the beginning of the 21st century. The question is considered whether there is a problem in architectural shaping of residential buildings with a metal frame throughout different historical periods of the development of metal structures and at the present stage. In 2023, this issue becomes relevant for Russia, thanks to the course taken by the Ministry of Construction of the Russian Federation in 2022 to increase the share of metal structures in the construction industry. Historically, the practice of widespread use of steel frames in housing construction has not developed in Russia, therefore, foreign analogues of one of the leading countries in this field have been selected for consideration. Foreign experience can become a guide for Russian architects, designers, builders and developers.
