The article is devoted to the final stage in the history of the colonial press of British West Africa. The publication is based on materials from newspapers published in the 1940s - 1950s in Nigeria and Gambia. These publications are stored at the Library of Congress. The authors argue that periodicals are an important historical source for characterizing the processes of political, economic and socio-cultural modernization of Tropical Africa.
