The finite element method implemented in the ABAQUS software module was used to determine the deformed state during the calibration by drawing steel wire. The calculations of the strains and the average normal stress were performed at a relative reduction of 5% and die taper angles of 10 and 20o. It was found that in this case a peripheral layer of metal is created with a high strain, the strain itself here is several times greater than the average over the cross section. The distribution of the average normal stress shows that conditions are created in the center of the wire for the occurrence of internal discontinuities. Increasing the taper angle of the tool makes it possible to obtain a stronger metal, but creates additional deformation unevenness with localization of hardening in the surface layer.
