The article deals with the problems of typology in higher education. Typology is characterized as a method of scientific cognition, a way of studying processes in higher education and within specific universities. Three scientific approaches taken in unity are applied - typological, community and resource. The article uses statistical data of a national and regional nature, as well as materials of an empirical study in the Ural federal district.
