The article deals with the formation of philosophical views of V. V. Rozanov (1856–1919), in particular his monograph ‘On Understanding’ (1886), which foreshadowed many ideas of hermeneutics. It is explained why Rozanov’s attempt failed and his transition from philosophy as a science to philosophical journalism is described.
