The reasons for the shortage of engineers in their mass production are being examined in this article. The retrospective analysis of the primary motives for the technical students' professionalization within the regional universities is presented. The process of technical specialists' formation is studied within the three main areas: primary motives while choosing the university; the structure of professional expectations; professional plans of the 3rd year students.
