The monograph consists of essays on some prominent English novelists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each essay examines the art of an individual novelist and his or her specific contribution to creating the novelistic landscape in England from the beginning of the nineteenth century. Major novels by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Virginia Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, Hilary Mantel, and many others are explored in detail, with particular attention given to the analysis of the prose and the artistic approach of each writer. Anglicists from Moscow, Minsk, Oxford, Ekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Kazan, Ufa, Saratov and Perm contributed to the volume which should be of interest to University teachers of literature, students and all those who enjoy English literature.
